DANDELION BOUQUET (keating) Might have been the first time I ever walked home from school With the older girl Karen She was seven and so cool Our mothers were waiting At home for us Cause this was the first time They let us not take the bus As we started walking We came 'cross a field Covered in yellow That's when Karen kneeled Down for the first stem And there we would stay For our mothers we'd pick them A dandelion bouquet Our dandelion bouquet We'd pick for our mothers Till the end of the day We thought we'd pick Just a few But we stayed there for hours Cause we'd never seen Such beautiful flowers As the sun dipped below us Without a care We heard our mothers screaming Our names through the air When they finally found us They knelt down and cried Tears of relief They thought we had died With smiles on our faces And love in our eyes We offered those flowers That felt like a prize But then Karens mother Cursed them back to their seeds Knocked them out of our hands Said they were just weeds Our dandelion bouquet We picked for our mothers Till the end of the day We thought we'd pick just a few But we stayed there for hours We'd never seen Such beautiful flowers (c) 2023 Matthew Keating Music ASCAP

JUST LIKE ANGELINA (mayone) Oh my girl you were so young when you stepped off the boat Into a new world you were thrown a lump in your throat A foreigner in a foreign land sad signora I can still hear her voice as I'm making the sauce Just like Angelina Black smoke rising out of chimney stacks making pennies a day A crust of bread and a tenement she worked like a slave A stranger in a strange land missing la famiglia I can still feel her force as I'm stirring the sauce Just like Angelina Oh my girl you were so old when I was a kid Making gravy in the afternoon simmering under the lid You made a home in a homeless world and I was your little bambino I can still feel her hugs in her arms all wrapped up With all the love between us Though the recipe's lost I can still make the sauce Just like Angelina's Just like Angelina (c) 2023 Mayone Music SESAC

about

Coming off of last years release of their debut album A GOOD SIGN Matt Keating and Steve Mayone (aka the Bastards of Fine Arts) are releasing a new two song single Dandelion Bouquet/Just Like Angelina to coincide with Mothers Day.

The two songwriters explore two separate stories of their personal experiences of the maternal relationship in these unique and emotionally resonant songs.

Matt Keating’s DANDELION BOUQUET is a true story of one of his earliest memories of walking home from school with his childhood friend and coming upon a field of dandelions, spending what seemed like hours picking flowers to give to their mothers. Their mothers (in the time before cell phones) were at home worrying about their errant children. The kids soon discover the fine line between good intentions in their appreciation of beauty, and the realities of fear in others.

Steve Mayone’s JUST LIKE ANGELINA is his ode to his grandmother that he never met but imagines what it might have been like for her to immigrate to America in the early 20th century. In re-telling her story, he attempts to shed light on his family traditions and what it must feel like to be a foreigner, struggling to fit in and be accepted in a strange new land. His grandmothers Marinara Sauce is the vehicle he uses to find a deeper connection to her and himself.

The two songs, though very different in some ways both explore similar emotional terrain with simple yet eloquent arrangements, each musician supporting the other instrumentally in the expression of a common vision.
